Apple Sauce

Apple sauce can be used as an ingredient or addition in many meals. It is a very standard recipe to have in your recipe collection. I sometimes double this recipe and freeze containers to use for when I have a craving for apple caramel crepes or warmed up over ice cream. I've also included this in a pork chop recipe. As for the type of apple to use, I'd recommend using golden delicious, gala, honey crisp or granny smith.

First things first, peel and dice up the apples.

Add all the ingredients into one big pot over the stove. Let cook over medium high for about 20 min. until the apples have softened and turned into a chunky looking sauce. Remove from heat and mash the apple sauce.

You can serve warm right away as a topping for ice cream, or even crepes. If you will be having it later, let cool before storing it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. If you are planning to freeze it, once cooled add to a freezer safe container/zip lock bag for up to a few months. To defrost take out and leave in refrigerator the day before use or just use the microwave to heat up. Just be careful if microwaving and be sure to heat in short increments, stopping to stir until it has warmed to your taste.

Apple Sauce Recipe:

Ingredients:

4 apples peeled and diced

2 tsp lemon juice

2/3 cup or handful of sultana raisins

3 tbsp light brown sugar

2 cups of natural apple juice

½ tsp ground cinnamon

¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg

Directions:

1. Place all ingredients into a medium pot over medium high heat and cook until a chunky sauce forms approx. 20 min. stirring occasionally. If sauce begins to splatter reduce heat.

2. Once apples are soft and sauce forms remove it from the heat and mash with a potato masher.

3. You can serve right away warm over ice cream. Or let cool before adding to containers if you will be using later. I like to keep half in the refrigerator for up to a week in an airtight container for use and then freeze the other container for future use.
